There are themes in the book that could be disturbing to younger people. My family were there as dad was working for Philips and after the company was nationalized we had to 'take' a 'pretend holiday' to Dutch Guiana in order to escape. We get to see the "elder" Jason Mallory vulnerable and more approachable. But her health has suffered and she is now reportedly near death - and this is when the magic comes in. This tale centers around Annie Bell, the talented chef of Riversong, and expands upon the glimpse of Annie’s life we were given in the first novel. That is notably true of war in the air, where the episodic nature of combat and the difficulty of measuring victory and defeat have frustrated historians, memoirists and novelists alike. The journeys, full of pathos and often laced with humour, provide insight into their inner strength, values, and triumph over adversity. Many can see elephants in the circus or at the zoo. I am an avid reader and have always loved time travel stories. Probably the appeal of this book lies in its stressing the basic needs of human beings: freedom, self esteem, friendship, peace of mind: the author manages to give them due importance and gets his reader's attention.
